There has been a growing concern in the US over the high cesarean section rates, particularly for first time low-risk mothers. As a nation, over a third of newborn babies are born via cesarean section with some hospitals rates over 50%. These rates are alarmingly high and researchers say that your choice of facility is a large determining factor. With national numbers as shocking as these, you might wonder, where does San Antonio, Texas stand?

According to consumer reports.

  • Baptist Medical Center- 31 percent.
  • University Hospital – 34 percent
  • Methodist Hospital – 35 percent
  • Methodist Stone Oak – 40 percent.

Not all hospitals will report their numbers when consumer reports are created which is why the list is shorter than expected.

So what should our cesarean rates be?

According to the World Health Organization:

“Since 1985, the international healthcare community has considered the ideal rate for caesarean sections to be between 10-15%. Since then, caesarean sections have become increasingly common in both developed and developing countries. When medically necessary, a caesarean section can effectively prevent maternal and newborn mortality. Two new HRP studies show that when caesarean section rates rise towards 10% across a population, the number of maternal and newborn deaths decreases. When the rate goes above 10%, there is no evidence that mortality rates improve.”

These reports and research are very important for first time moms but what about those who have already had a cesarean section? Check out our blog on Vaginal Birth After Cesarean.
