Prenatal Care in San Antonio
Prenatal care refers to the care provided to a pregnant mother throughout her pregnancy. It lays the foundation of a healthy pregnancy and eventually, a healthy birth, baby, and family.
Prenatal care is provided through a series of health visits made with your healthcare provider throughout pregnancy. These visits are a part of your routine health journey and can help ensure both the mother and the baby are doing well at all points in their journey.
What is prenatal care?
During prenatal visits, healthcare providers perform various examinations and assessments to monitor the progress of the pregnancy. They may use tests and scans to aid their evaluation. Regular prenatal check-ups allow for early detection and management of any potential complications that may arise during pregnancy.
Prenatal care also provides mothers guidance on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle choices that can positively impact the health of the mother and baby. They also address common concerns and anxieties associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery.
Regular prenatal care helps promote a positive birth experience and reduces the need for emergency interventions during birth.
When should you start prenatal care?
We recommend starting prenatal care as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. This will help us get you on a proper visiting schedule, and we can begin monitoring your pregnancy from the start to ensure everything is fine.
After your first visit, our recommended visiting schedule usually looks like this:
- One visit every 4 weeks until 26 weeks of pregnancy
- One visit every 2 weeks until 36 weeks of pregnancy
- Weekly visits until delivery
Some mothers may require additional visits depending on their requirements. We can always adapt the schedule according to your needs.
What happens in prenatal care?
Prenatal appointments are like every other routine health check that you get. Our visits are about an hour long, allowing time for check-in at the front desk before spending the remainder of the time with your midwife.
We start with a general history and exam. Then according to how far along you are, we might recommend certain tests or scans to ensure you and the baby are doing fine.
Generally, we recommend lab tests:
- At the beginning of your care; these include blood tests and urine tests
- At around 26 weeks
- At around 36-37 weeks
We recommend getting an ultrasound done at around 20 weeks, with follow-up if needed.
Some of the questions we’ll ask you at every visit, include:
- How’s your diet been?
- How’s your hydration?
- Are you exercising?
- Are you sleeping well?
- How are your stress levels?
And then you have time to ask questions or address any concerns that you might be having.
We’re here to support you throughout your pregnancy to make sure that this journey is smooth sailing for you. When the time comes, we also provide education tailored to your questions about birth and postpartum preparation so you know what to expect.
