Are Supplements Safe During Pregnancy?

Do you take supplements? Around 90% of people don’t get the recommended amount of important nutrients from food alone, so they turn to supplements to fill the gaps. Taking supplements can help you maintain the proper balance of vitamins and minerals when you aren’t getting enough through food. A common question we get from moms that are taking supplements is if it is safe for the baby and if they can continue or need to stop.

Generally, supplements are going to be safe if they are nutritionally based!

There are certain herbs that we do try to avoid during pregnancy such as juniper, licorice, red clover, and rosemary, along with a few others. Always check the labels on things you consume or put onto your body to look out for the herbs that are traditionally regarded with caution during pregnancy.

Pregnancy increases the need for nutrients since you are nourishing yourself and your growing baby. It is possible and best to get all of the nutrients you need by eating a variety of healthy foods without taking a supplement. Foods that are naturally rich in nutrients include fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fish, whole grain, and dairy.

Foods that are rich in nutrients
  • Brown or wild rice
  • Quinoa
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Leafy greens
  • Tomatoes
  • Avocados
  • Low-fat cottage cheese
  • String Cheese

There can be certain circumstances like dietary restrictions, poor nutrition, or multiple pregnancies, where the pregnant mom isn’t getting enough through food alone and might need to supplement.

Supplements that are typically safe during pregnancy:
  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Folate
  • Iron
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium
  • Ginger
  • Fish oil
  • Probiotics
  • Choline

We always like to tell our clients that if you would offer it to your small child, then it will most likely be safe during pregnancy. It is always best to ask your midwife (not Dr. Google) before taking any supplements to discuss the risks and benefits of continuing them.
