Postpartum Care
At Birth Center Stone Oak, we firmly believe that care for the mother shouldn’t end with the baby’s birth. Continuity of maternal care is the foundation for the Midwives Model of Care.
At Birth Center Stone Oak, we begin postpartum care soon after the baby’s birth. We talk the parents through the basics and teach them what to expect in the coming days and weeks. Our midwives will advise you on monitoring your baby’s health and guide you regarding the postpartum visit schedule accordingly.
What happens during a postpartum appointment?
Postpartum care appointments are similar to your prenatal visits. They are check-ins to see how you’ve been doing since we last saw you. We’ll check on both mom and baby, measure the baby’s growth, talk about breastfeeding, and evaluate the mom’s healing process.
If you’re having trouble with breastfeeding, your midwife will help you and your baby with positioning and latching so you can get a hang of it. We will also be happy to address any other concerns regarding postpartum or childcare, so you know you have a guiding hand through it all.
How many postpartum visits do I have?
For the first visit right after birth, we understand it might be difficult to come in. So a midwife will visit you at your home within the first 24–48 hours to see how the mother and baby are doing.
A birth center visit is scheduled with mom and baby 2 weeks later to ensure the baby is growing adequately and the mother is healing optimally.
Subsequently, a 6-week postpartum visit is scheduled to discuss family planning and to make sure the process of transition is normal. This schedule is flexible and can be adjusted according to the family’s needs.
Generally speaking, postpartum visits are scheduled for one week, two weeks, and six weeks.
What if I need more support?
If you need support apart from the scheduled postpartum visits, do not hesitate to come in. We’ll be more than happy to cater to your needs and provide you with any kind of resources or support that you need.
