Labor & Birth at Birth Center Stone Oak
If you’re thinking about giving birth at Birth Center Stone Oak and are wondering what the experience will be like, let’s walk through it together.
During the last of your prenatal appointments, you’ll communicate with your primary midwife and make a birth plan together. This will give you a basic idea of what your labor and birth will look like.
What Happens On The Day You Give Birth
When you arrive at the birth center, you will settle into one of our three birth suites, each allowing you to customize your space. You can bring your favorite people, snacks, blankets, aroma diffusers, and whatever else you need to make the place feel more home-like
Throughout labor, we’ll regularly check on you and your baby, monitoring vital signs and listening to the baby’s heartbeat. During initial labor, you’ll be free to walk around, relax in different positions, and have snacks.
We’ll respect your preferences for the birthing position, providing guidance and support throughout.
After birth, your baby will be placed on your chest for immediate skin-to-skin contact, and we’ll avoid separating you unless medically necessary. We practice delayed cord clamping due to its many benefits.
Once you’re recovering after birth, we let you rest and check in once in a while to see if you and the baby are doing okay. We closely monitor the baby’s breathing, heart rate, and temperature along with mom’s vitals.
When Can I Go Home?
The minimum stay after delivery is 2 hours, but most families stay for 4-6 hours. Sometimes, we may ask you to stay longer if you require more monitoring. During your stay, you can initiate breastfeeding, start eating, or simply relax while your body recovers.
Around the 2-hour mark, we’ll conduct a newborn exam and administer optional medications, if you desire.
Once both you and your baby have remained stable, typically 4-6 hours post-birth, we assist in preparing you and your baby to return home. We answer questions about getting settled into your home and provide guidance about problems you’ll face initially.
