How to Manage Postpartum Feelings

At Birth Center Stone Oak, we believe in continuity of care. Therefore, postpartum care begins immediately after the birth of your baby. Everyone’s postpartum journey looks different and is specific to their needs during that time. In our care, we visit our families in their homes within the first 24-48 hours and schedule a clinic visit with mom and baby at 2 weeks to ensure a successful breastfeeding experience and a healthy start together as mother and child.

Postpartum care also includes checking in on mom’s feelings and emotions. After your baby has arrived, you may experience any number of feelings. Your body and mind have gone through many changes during and after pregnancy, which can sometimes lead to feeling sad and empty. This is not uncommon and it is something we can help you overcome. In fact, mild depression and mood swings are so common in new moms that it has been coined: the baby blues. The baby blues usually fade on their own within a few days to weeks after birth.

Things you can do to help with these blue feelings:

  • Get as much rest as possible.
  • Accept help from loved ones.
  • Connect with other new moms going through the same thing.
  • Take time for self-care.

There are times when the baby blues don’t pass as quickly as one would hope and might. During these times, we would recommend postpartum counseling to offer you relief and help you start feeling like yourself again.

Birth Center Stone Oak offers postpartum counseling with Angela Gurno, MS, LPC, NCC at our location. Postpartum counseling assists you in coping with the flood of emotions including postpartum depression. Counseling also helps rebalance families and address any sibling issues that may arise. In postpartum counseling, you will discuss things like your feelings, beliefs on pregnancy, recent behavior, your history, and your life now.
