5 Ways to Encourage Postpartum Healing
5 Ways to Encourage Postpartum Healing
Recovering well during the postpartum period is extremely important for new mothers. A mother’s well-being in the postpartum period ensures better overall health and better care for the baby. It also improves the chances of another healthy pregnancy later.
How long does postpartum recovery usually last?
Postpartum recovery after a vaginal delivery is usually considered to be 6-8 weeks. This time is an overall estimate where most of your reproductive organs return to their pre-pregnancy or permanent post-pregnancy state.
This period can be longer or shorter depending on how healthy birth was and how smoothly the labor progressed.
If you had any interventions, your recovery period may be a little longer as well.
How can I promote my postpartum healing?
Here are some things you can do to encourage your healing process.
1. Rest
Motherhood can be extremely tiring in the initial few days! A combination of nerves and your baby’s demands will keep you on your toes at all times. While it can be hard, try to not let it overwhelm you, and make sure you’re resting whenever you can.
Ask your partner, friends, or family to help you with babysitting whenever you can so you can take that time to rest. Because trust us, you need it, and it only gets more tiring from here on.
2. Focus On Your Nutrition
Focusing on your nutrition during the postpartum period is super important since the demand for certain nutrients increases if you’re breastfeeding and also because you spend a lot of vital nutrients during pregnancy and labor.
Eat foods that are rich in fiber, iron, calcium, and vitamins so you’re getting an adequate supply of everything you need to prevent deficiency-related health problems.
It’s also important to make sure you’re taking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
3. Ask for help
There is no shame in admitting if you need help, especially during the first couple of weeks of motherhood! You’re probably exhausted from recovering after labor, and you’re also trying to figure out the best way to care for your baby’s needs. It wouldn’t be surprising if you feel burnt out soon without help.
Ask for help whenever you can. Ask your partner to divide responsibilities so you both get downtime to rest. Whenever possible, ask friends and family or even hire someone to babysit occasionally just so you can take time to do something for yourself or just take a nap when you need one!
If you don’t want help babysitting, you can ask friends to run errands like grocery shopping for you.
4. Go to healthcare appointments
Postpartum healthcare appointments play a very important role in ensuring that your postpartum recovery progresses smoothly. Your healthcare provider will assess your overall health, screen you for any postpartum health problems, and will help address any concerns that you might have.
They can also help you with any lactation or family planning-related questions and help guide you to the right person should you need additional assistance.
