It’s Time to Think About Your Health | Well Woman Care for Life
A new year is just around the corner, and while your personal goals change, your health and wellness should be your top priority this year. If wellness is part of your New Year’s resolution, let us help you! Come to us for annual well-woman care in the new year.
What is Well-Woman Care?
Well-woman care is a comprehensive approach to women’s health that focuses on preventive care, early detection of diseases, and treatment of conditions related to reproductive health. This typically includes a thorough history and physical exam. It may also include special exams such as a pap smear, a pelvic exam, and a breast exam. During the physical exam, your midwife will check for signs of general health problems, such as high blood pressure. Similarly, breast and pelvic exams help exclude any abnormalities.
Well-woman care also includes preventive screenings and counseling. Preventive screenings may include tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cholesterol, and diabetes. Counseling may include discussions about lifestyle habits, nutrition, exercise, and birth control.
How is Well Woman’s Care with a midwife different from an OB or general practitioner?
Well-woman care with a midwife is more patient-centered, allowing women more liberty to make decisions about their health. It is also more comprehensive since appointments with midwives are longer in duration, giving women plenty of time to voice their concerns.
On the contrary, well-woman care at a hospital is more protocol-driven. Each woman is subject to the same tests and examinations, regardless of their history or requirements. It allows you less room to make your own decisions or ask questions. These appointments may also be shorter, depending on how busy your attending physician is.
When should someone start receiving well-woman care?
You should ideally start receiving well-woman care as soon as you hit puberty. But you should have had at least one well-woman visit by the age of 21. If you plan to get sexually active earlier, it’s good to seek well-woman care to learn about the different contraception methods and safe sex knowledge.
A well-woman care appointment needs to occur once a year. This allows for the timely detection and treatment of reproductive health problems.
