Does the Birth Center Stone Oak Use Pitocin?
You might have heard the word Pitocin before, whether from childbirth education materials or from the movies. But do you really know what it is and what role it plays in birth? Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know!
What is Pitocin?
Pitocin is a synthetic form of oxytocin, which is a hormone responsible for multiple functions. In the context of labor, oxytocin is the hormone responsible for causing uterine contractions.
In hospitals, Pitocin is used to induce or augment labor, making contractions stronger and faster. It is also used during the third stage of labor to help deliver the placenta.
Do birth centers have Pitocin?
Birth centers use very limited medical interventions. We mostly rely on natural methods to progress labor. Which is why we usually do not use Pitocin during labor.
Using Pitocin requires close monitoring as it can cause intense contractions with no breaks (a condition known as uterine tetany), which may cause maternal exhaustion and fetal compromise.
However, apart from labor, we do use Pitocin for other purposes.
How does the birth center use Pitocin?
We will sometimes use Pitocin postpartum to prevent hemorrhage (excessive uterine bleeding). We administer it as a shot into the thigh to help the uterus contract more efficiently. This helps deliver the placenta with ease and can help prevent excessive bleeding.
Can birth centers induce labor more naturally?
We believe in letting labor progress naturally with minimal intervention. However, sometimes it can take longer than expected. In some cases, we can try certain natural techniques to aid the process. These include:
- Having a drink or a snack: Sometimes, getting a nutrient boost can provide the muscles strength to contract more effectively.
- Walking around: The force of gravity can help your baby’s descent and aid labor’s progress.
- Yoga poses: Certain yoga poses, such as those done on a birthing ball or by kneeling on the bed, can help your muscles align in a way that allows for better contractions.
- Positive Affirmations: The mind-muscle connection is stronger than we think. Positive affirmations and words of encouragement can help motivate mothers and, in turn, augment labor.
- Having Certain Foods: Certain foods such as pineapple, dates, or raspberry leaf tea are known to help induce labor. You can try those if you wish to.
Our midwives are specially trained to deliver babies naturally, and they have done so successfully for many years and generations. It’s natural to be intimidated, but rest assured, you’ll be taken care of. If you have any other questions, send us a message!
