How to Encourage Labor Naturally (Without Stress or Pressure)
Going through pregnancy is a life-changing experience. Experiencing your body adapting to making it the most suitable environment for your baby’s growth is beautiful in its own way.
When you’re near your due date, it’s natural to feel a little angsty in anticipation of meeting your baby. Here are some gentle ways you can encourage labor when it’s time.
The Beauty of Patience (37–42 weeks)
A normal pregnancy is expected to last 37-42 weeks; anything earlier would mean preterm, and any pregnancy lasting longer than that would be post-term.
Under Texas midwifery practice law, midwives attend births from 37 to 42 weeks, and that window is considered normal and safe. It allows sufficient time for your baby to develop, so if they are to be born, they will be healthy and have little to no issues adjusting to life on the outside. So, between that window, it’s important to let nature run its course and wait it out. Your body is designed to go into labor when the time is right.
During this time, take the time to rest (you might not get as much once the baby is here!), hydrate, and just prepare for your baby’s arrival.
That being said, it’s often seen that some mothers near the 42-week mark and still don’t go into labor. This is not as uncommon as you’d think, so no need to stress. When you’re post-term and haven’t gone into labor, your midwives are legally required to recommend transfer to obstetric care, ensuring both baby and parents’ safety.
Gentle, Natural Ways to Encourage Labor
While surgical or medical intervention is sometimes needed, there are some natural ways you can try to encourage labor once you’re at week 39-40, with the support of your midwife.
Movement & Positioning
The easiest thing you can do is increase mobility. Try walking, gentle stretching, yoga, curb-walking, and using a birthing ball to get some movement in. It can help babies settle into an optimal position and encourage natural contractions.
Relaxation & Oxytocin
Another easy thing you can try is just to relax! Calm, connection, and comfort matter. Try warm baths, deep breathing exercises, massage, or even laughter with your partner.
All of these activities can help release oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which helps soften the cervix and start contractions. They also help get you into a better mindset to welcome your baby into the world.
Herbal Tinctures
Our birth center provides herbal tinctures for clients who need them. These are specially formulated blends to gently support uterine readiness. If you need one, talk to your midwife so they can advise the best available option for you.
Note that these are provided under midwife supervision.
Castor Oil – A midwife’s tool for the right time
If none of the natural methods work for you, we have some that we can help you try as well. This includes the use of castor oil to encourage labor. It is important that you only try this under the supervision of your midwife since it is quite effective and can be detrimental if not done right.
Castor oil is a naturally occurring oil obtained from the castor plant. It’s used in herbal medicine since it helps stimulate the bowels and relieve constipation. This effect also triggers uterine stimulation and contraction.
Our midwives use it safely and intentionally as part of a comprehensive plan when the body and baby are both ready. They do it with the right dose at the right time and monitor for any adverse effects as well.
Trusting your body and your midwife
While you can always try methods to encourage labor and speed it up, we always recommend being patient and trusting your body to do the right thing. It’s important to understand that every tool and practice is meant to support, not rush, the natural process of labor.
