Hydrotherapy for Birth
Care in birth centers is based on the holistic care model, which promotes natural methods of care centered on the patient’s needs and personal preferences.
There are minimal medical interventions offered at the birth center. Instead, natural methods of care are offered that help ease discomfort and offer the support needed for labor and birth. These options often include hydrotherapy and water birth.
What is hydrotherapy in labor?
Simply put, hydrotherapy refers to using water to ease labor-related pain and discomfort. The buoyancy from the water helps with the gravity-associated pressure on the pelvis and eases it off. This helps release the pressure on the lower back and encourages mothers to relax. It’s sometimes called the “aquadural” because of its soothing effect
The different ways hydrotherapy is offered include birth tubs, deep baths, birth pools, or standing showers.
Benefits of hydrotherapy during labor
Hydrotherapy is gaining increasing popularity amongst advocates for natural birth since it aids mothers in avoiding unnecessary interventions or medications.
Some of the benefits of hydrotherapy include:
- Eases muscle tension and promotes relaxation
- Helps reduce the perception of pain, sometimes delaying or avoiding interventions
- Lesser need for analgesia and epidural
- Encourages freedom of movement and instinctive positioning
- It can speed up labor progress by lowering stress hormones
- Creates a sense of privacy and calm
Overall, hydrotherapy is associated with better birth experiences with little to no adverse effects.
Safety of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is considered safe for most low-risk pregnancies. If you’re cleared to have a natural birth, you can probably try hydrotherapy without any added risk as well. Still, our midwives monitor temperature, hydration, and your and your baby’s well-being to ensure everything is fine.
That being said, hydrotherapy is not always recommended if certain complications arise during the course of the pregnancy or labor. These include high maternal blood pressure, low fetal heart rate, fever, or any other medical complications.
What to expect at a birth center
Most birth centers, including Birth Center Stone Oak, offer deep tubs and showers to facilitate hydrotherapy. Our midwives and nurses are trained to ensure your safety. We also offer options for essential oils, dim lights, and partner support in the room.
