Chiropractic in Pregnancy: Maximizing Your Adjustments
Regular chiropractic adjustments offer a range of benefits for many of our pregnant clients, including improved posture, reduced stress levels, and better sleep quality. The effects of your adjustment can last for days or a few hours, depending on the things you do after you visit the chiropractor.
Maximizing the Benefits of Your Chiropractic Adjustments
To prolong the positive effects of your chiropractic adjustment, consider following these simple guidelines:
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is one of the easiest and most effective ways to support your spinal health. Proper hydration keeps your joints lubricated and helps maintain cushioning in your spinal discs, which can reduce the risk of misalignment.
Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. We recommend carrying a water bottle when stepping outside (or even at home) to ensure your body stays hydrated. Hydration is especially important to maintain for a healthy pregnancy!
Maintain Correct Posture
Whether sitting at a desk, standing, or sleeping, it’s important to be mindful of your posture.
It’s best to discuss your daily activities with both your midwife and your chiropractor for advice on maintaining the right posture. Here are a few key essentials:
- While standing, keep your shoulders back and avoid slouching.
- If you have a job that requires you to sit for prolonged hours, make sure you have an ergonomic chair.
- When sleeping, use a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck.
Manage Stress
Stress can manifest physically and show up as muscle tension around your spine, especially during pregnancy. To avoid this, practice stress management techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga.
Regular low-impact exercise supports a relaxed and aligned spine by improving circulation and muscle tone. On days when you don’t feel like exercising, make sure to stretch a bit and get some movement.
What to Avoid After a Chiropractic Adjustment
After an adjustment, avoiding activities that might strain your spine is crucial.
Avoid heavy lifting, sudden twisting movements, or sitting for prolonged periods without proper support. These activities can undo the benefits of your adjustment and potentially lead to discomfort. They can also lead to troublesome worsening of pregnancy symptoms.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes, chiropractic care is generally safe during pregnancy. Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce common pregnancy discomforts such as back pain and improve overall wellness.
Chiropractors use special techniques to ensure the mother and baby’s comfort and safety. Make sure the chiropractor you choose is familiar with these techniques.
Follow your chiropractor’s advice and maintain a healthy lifestyle to stay aligned between chiropractic adjustments. Proper hydration, correct posture, and stress management will help you make the most out of your adjustment.
