What You Should Know About a Birth Center
If you’re considering choosing a birth center instead of a hospital for your delivery, it’s a good idea to do your research before making the decision. This will help you know what to expect and make informed decisions that are good for both you and your baby.
How does a birth center differ from a hospital?
A birth center works on the principle of holistic care. We provide a more comfortable, home-like environment compared to hospitals, which function based on allopathic care in a conventional sterile environment.
The primary care providers at the birth center are midwives or midwives who have completed their certification for advanced training. Midwives can provide prenatal care, labor and birth care, and postpartum care.
The primary healthcare providers at hospitals are Obstetricians or gynecologists who have completed their degree as an MD along with special training in OB/GYN. They can provide care for pregnancy and birth, along with any other diseases related to the female reproductive system. They are authorized to prescribe medicines and tests and to perform surgeries if needed.
At a birth center, the care is focused on the mother and allows her to make her own decisions regarding her pregnancy and birth. However, birth centers are not equipped to care for high-risk pregnancies.
Hospitals on the other hand have regulations and protocols for care that are usually applied to everyone. They are also equipped to care for high-risk pregnancies and deal with birth-related emergencies if they arise.
What are the disadvantages of giving birth in a birth center?
The only major drawback of a birth center is that the care providers can not provide care in case of high-risk pregnancies or emergencies. If a mother needs urgent medical attention or emergency C-section, they need to be transferred to a hospital.
Additionally, while birth centers provide some newborn care, they can’t provide specialized care for your baby. If your baby needs medical evaluation right away, they need to be taken to a pediatrician. In a hospital, the pediatricians are usually already on board for a newborn evaluation.
What are the advantages of giving birth in a birth center?
Birth centers allow mothers a lot of freedom to make decisions about their care. The care is customized according to the mother’s needs and expectations instead of applying a one-size-fits-all protocol to everyone.
Also, the environment at a birth center is more casual and comfortable. There is more flexibility and room for personalization. You can bring in whomever and whatever you like, you can decide who you want on your birth team, and you can leave soon after birth if you and your baby are doing well.
Research suggests that people who receive prenatal care at a birth center are less prone to complications like preterm birth, low birth weight, and emergency C-sections.
