Essential Teaching Tools for Labor and Birth
Childbirth is complex and transformative. Understanding what happens during labor and birth can ease many expectant mothers’ apprehension. At Birth Center Stone Oak, we use interactive teaching tools in our prenatal classes. These resources are designed to educate and make labor and birth an engaging and reassuring experience.
Here’s an overview of how these tools can help our clients navigate the path from pregnancy to parenthood.
1. Model Babies for Hands-On Learning
Model babies are critical to our childbirth education classes. With these lifelike replicas, we can show how the baby moves through the pelvis and accurately demonstrate the mechanisms of birth.
They can also be a good visual for older siblings when they join in on the appointments!
Model babies can also be used to show how to hold, bathe, and care for a newborn. They provide a hands-on experience for expecting mothers without the anxiety of handling a real infant for the first time.
We teach swaddling techniques, diaper changing, and safe sleeping practices using these models. This practical learning experience helps build confidence among future parents so they feel prepared for newborn care.
2. The Pelvis Model
Another tool is the pelvis model. This anatomical replica of the female pelvis offers a clear visual of what occurs internally during childbirth.
During our sessions, we demonstrate how the baby moves through the pelvis at different stages of labor. We discuss the importance of pelvic bone structure, the role of ligaments and muscles during birth, and how various positions can facilitate a smoother delivery.
This understanding helps demystify the birth process and helps mothers understand how their bodies work during labor with a more hands-on approach.
3. The Exercise Ball
Finally, the exercise ball is another tool that helps throughout the pregnancy journey.
Before labor, it’s excellent for performing prenatal exercises that strengthen the core, back, and legs – key areas that support effective labor.
During labor, the ball provides comfort and relief. Mothers can sit, rock, or gently bounce on it to help manage contraction pains, encourage the baby to move down into the pelvis, and aid in cervical dilation.
After birth, the ball can help new moms gently ease back into exercise, focusing on rebuilding strength and stability.
At Birth Center Stone Oak, we believe in empowering expectant mothers with knowledge and practical skills through our comprehensive use of teaching tools. These tools educate and enhance the overall childbirth experience, making it as smooth and understandable as possible. Check out this video to see these tools in action.
